Londonderry road crash victim, 70, is named

A Londonderry man who died in a fatal road traffic collision has been named.

James Brendan O’Connor (known as Brendan) died after he was struck by a vehicle on the Culmore Road shortly before 7pm on Sunday night.

His passing has been described as a “terrible loss” for all who knew him.

Police have confirmed that Mr O’Connor, who was 70 years old, was from the local area.

The Culmore Road was closed to traffic overnight to preserve the scene of the accident, and was reopened to traffic just before 9am on Monday.

SDLP leader Colum Eastwood was among those who knew Mr O’Connor.

Foyle MLA Mr Eastwood told the Journal this morning: “It is a terrible tragedy for the family and friends.

“I knew him and he was someone who was very committed to his family and his community, and his death will be a terrible loss to all who knew him.”

Sinn Fein Councillor Mickey Cooper meanwhile has also expressed his condolences following the tragic death.

Speaking today he said: “The local community is shocked and saddened by the death of a man in an accident on the Culmore Road on Sunday night.

“I would like to express my sympathies to the family and friends of this man.”

Police meanwhile earlier today confirmed that a 43-year-old man was arrested and questioned the fatal road traffic collision.

A PSNI spokeswoman said: “Police can confirm that a 43-year-old man was arrested and questioned in connection with last night’s fatal collision in Derry.

“He was subsequently released on police bail pending further inquiries.”

Police investigating the circumstances of the collision earlier today appealed for witnesses to the collision. The number to call 101.
