Late on Sunday night, the Roads Service said the M2’s southbound lanes were closed between J4 (Sandyknowes) and J2 (Greencastle), and that the focus was the Bellevue bridge.

Police simply described it as an “incident”, and gave no further details.

However, one source said that it was believed a woman had fallen from the road bridge which crosses the motorway – although this was unconfirmed.

The M2 at that point passes beneath the edge of the Glengormley area of Newtownabbey where the Bellevue Arms pub stands, overlooking Belfast.

As of 12.18am on Monday, the Roads Service said the lanes had re-opened.

Police confirmed on Monday afternoon that a woman had indeed died. Her death is not thought to be suspicious.
