Man dies after Co Down road accident

A man in his 20s has died after a single vehicle road traffic collision near Kilkeel this morning.

A PSNI spokesman said they were alerted to the collision on the Killowen Road between Kilkeel and Rostrevor shortly before 6.30am.

The spokesman said two other men have been taken to hospital for treatment for injuries that are not believed to be life threatening.

Inspector Lynne Corbett is appealing for anyone who was travelling on the Killowen Road this morning and who witnessed the collision to contact Police in Newry or the Collision Investigation Unit on the non-emergency number 101.

At this time the Killowen Road remains closed.

SDLP MP Margaret Ritchie has told of her sadness at the death of a man in an accident.

“I convey my deepest sympathies and condolences to the bereaved family at this tragic time,” she said.

“I know that the local community in Killowen and the Mournes area will stand shoulder to shoulder with the family of the man who lost his life, and will wrap them in a warm embrace at this time of sadness and sorrow. Death is always a difficult phenomenon, but it is more challenging for the family, friends and relatives of the bereaved when it is sudden, untimely and the result of an accident.

“I understand that two other men were treated in hospital in injuries. I hope that they will fully recover, discharged from hospital and be restored to their families.”

Sinn Féin MLA Caitriona Ruane has expressed her condolences to the family of the man who died.

“There is a sense of shock at the news that a man has died and other injured in a road traffic accident while travelling to work,” she said.

“This is the latest in a line of tragedies on South Down roads over the past year and the local community are devastated by this news.

“I offer my sincere condolences to the family of the man and I hope that those injured make a full and speedy recovery.”
