The brick struck and smashed the windscreen on the driver side. The attacker fled the scene on foot.

Sergeant Brian Caskey said the officers were shaken by the incident.

“The vehicle was exiting Pinewood Avenue at around 2am when a male dressed in a dark hooded jacket with his face covered emerged from an alleyway and threw a brick at the vehicle,” he said.

“The brick struck the windscreen in front of the driver, smashing it.

“This male then ran off back in the direction of the alleyway.

“The officers were both left shaken but were physically unharmed.”

Sgt Caskey said the police patrol car will be forced off the road for some time while repairs are carried out as a result.

“The person responsible needs to be identified and brought to justice,” he added, appealing for witnesses to get in contact.
