It follows Northern Ireland’s first Euro 2016 game against Poland on Sunday.

PSNI Superintendent Nigel Goddard said: “I was informed this morning by my French counterparts of this tragic news.

“At this point and time the processes are that the Foreign and Commonwealth office will make contact with this man’s family and it would not be appropriate for me to comment.

“I believe it was an accident and not in any way disorder related, but a personal tragedy.”

The senior PSNI officer, who was speaking on BBC Radio Ulster, added: “I think it was in the early hours and from what I have been told this gentleman was on his own and possibly had quite a bit of drink taken and seems to have fallen, so it is an accident.”

He added that it was understood the man “had fallen from the promenade onto what is quite a rocky beach”.

It is understood the man was around 25-years-old.
