Omagh: Has all hope of justice now gone?

The release of a man charged with the 1998 Omagh bombing has left families feeling they will never get justice, the father of one victim has said.

Michael Gallagher, whose son Aiden was killed in the Real IRA blast, was in Ballymena Magistrates’ Court yesterday when the decision to drop the case against Seamus Daly was announced by a barrister for the PPS.

“We’ve been let down by the police service, by the PPS, by the criminal justice system...and this is probably, or was probably, the last chance for justice,” Mr Gallagher said.

Seven years ago, Mr Daly was one of four men successfully sued for bombing the Co Tyrone market town when he was found liable for the attack in a landmark civil case taken by some of the bereaved families. No one has ever been convicted of the 29 murders in a criminal court.

In a statement, the Omagh Support and Self Help Group said: “This shocking and deeply disturbing outcome today will only strengthen the resolve of those who remain committed to have all of the facts in relation to the Omagh bomb exposed.

“We repeat that objective will never be achieved through the continued abject failings of the PSNI.”
