Writing in the Daily Telegraph yesterday, William Hague said that leaving the EU “would certainly not be positive” for British-Irish relations.

Reacting to those remarks, Sir Hugh said that leaving the EU “would have far-reaching and deeply worrying implications for the safety and security of Northern Ireland”.

Sir Hugh made similar comments in an article for The Observer six months ago.

Yesterday he said: “The reality that there will have to be some kind of border controls between Northern Ireland and the Republic promises to upset the delicate accord that’s been built since the Good Friday Agreement. We should not take lightly the increased security we enjoy, thanks to the close working relationship of our police forces.”
