A body has been discovered in a Co Down town.

The police initially said they had no information about the find when contacted at 6.45pm.

Then shortly before 7pm, the press office responded by saying: “Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a man whose body was found in a house in the Ballygowan Park area of Banbridge this afternoon.

“A post-mortem examination will be carried out to determine the cause of death.”

The PSNI added that the body had been discovered at around 2.40pm.

DUP councillor Carla Lockhart said the scene of his death – a bungalow in a what she described as a quiet residental area – had been cordoned off by police.

She said: “It is obviously alarming for people to see such a heavy police presence in a residential area.

“I have spoken to the PSNI and they indicate that investigations are ongoing and officers will remain in the area until they have completed this process.

“We should not jump to conclusions at this stage about what may have happened, as we do not yet know if there are any suspicious cirmcumstances surrounding the death.”

As of about 11.15pm, councillor Lockhart it was no longer believed to be suspicious.

She offered her thoughts a prayers for the man’s family.
