Police tight-lipped after Co Armagh security alert

The PSNI has declined to say what suspicious items were taken away during a security alert in Lurgan.

The alert took place at St Coleman’s Cemetery during most of Thursday.

Sinn Fein councillor Maire Cairns said: “No plots have been dug up. They [the PSNI] have found a suspicious object in the graveyard and are hoping to deal with it as soon as possible.”

Videos on social media showed more than six PSNI Land Rovers at the cemetery.

On Wednesday footage was also shown of unmarked police cars surrounding a car in Lurgan’s Victoria Street.

Republican Sinn Fein claim that three of their members were searched.

The graveyard is not far from an illegal 1916 memorial erected by Republican Sinn Fein and opened last month.

A number of suspicious items were taken away for further examination, police said.

Three further searches were carried out at addresses in the Lurgan and Armagh areas. A number of items seized in these searches were also taken away for further examination.

Police declined to say what items were seized as the investigation is ongoing.
