Police have been granted an additional 36 hours to question three men arrested in connection with the murder of Stephen Carson in south Belfast on Thursday night.

Detectives have also issued an appeal for information on the movements of a dark coloured saloon car with Republic of Ireland number plates around the time of the shooting at Walmer Street.

Mr Carson was shot in the head around 10.45pm after a group of armed men broke in as he was eating dinner with his partner and nine-year-old son.

The 28-year-old victim took cover in a downstairs bathroom but he was shot through the door. He died later in hospital.

The three men, aged 32, 37 and 39, were arrested on suspicion of murder following searches in west Belfast on Friday night.

A firearm was recovered and has been sent for forensic tests.

Mr Carson, originally from Turf Lodge, had moved to the area following his release from prison. It is believed he had been under death threat from paramilitaries.

Police have appealed for anyone who noticed the car in question in the vicinity of Sunnyside Street or Hayward Avenue between 10pm and 11pm on Thursday, to contact detectives at Ladas Drive on 101 - or the Crimestoppers charity on 0800 555 111.
