PUP leader Billy Hutchinson has been co-opted onto Belfast City Council to replace Hugh Smyth.

Mr Smyth has retired after more than 40 years of representing those in the Shankill Road area, and Mr Hutchinson said he played a “pivotal” role in ceasefire negotiations, adding he is “owed a huge debt of gratitude for his unswerving commitment to peace and helping ordinary working-class people”.
