The number one concern for pensioners is heating their home in winter — but the Executive is not doing enough to help them, a charity has said.
Age Sector Platform said that work was under way to improve the energy efficiency of homes and develop a long-term sustainable energy supply but this was “of little comfort to thousands of pensioners who are finding it tough now”.
The charity will today launch its 2014 Pensioners’ Parliament at Belfast City Hall and has called on the Executive to provide urgent help to older people struggling to keep warm by using extra funds which it said were promised by the Treasury in December.
Michael Monaghan, chairman of the Pensioners’ Parliament, said that since it started in 2011 “the top concern of pensioners here has been keeping warm in winter. Above any other issue, older people are worried about the price of heating their home.”
