Daniel Allen, a member of Ards and North Down Council, was originally named in December as one of three Ulster Unionist candidates selected in North Down. His running mates were Alan Chambers and Carl McClean.

However, when the Ulster Unionists published their full list of candidates across Northern Ireland during their spring conference on Saturday, March 12, Mr Allen’s name was no longer included.

Instead, Chris Eisenstadt was named alongside Mr Chambers and Mr McClean.

In a statement issued on Monday, the UUP said it had accepted the resignation of Mr Allen, who is a member of the North Down Association.

A UUP spokesperson said: “Mr Allen was keen to run for the party in the Assembly Elections and a number of senior party officials went to great lengths to try to accommodate his demands, but ultimately those efforts were unsuccessful.”
