Belfast Lord Mayor councillor Nichola Mallon led the traditional wreath laying at the city Cenotaph today in honour of those who lost their lives on 1 July 1916 at the Battle of the Somme.

Many men from the 36th (Ulster) division and the 16th (Irish) division lost their lives in the battle.

Others laying wreaths today included First Minister Peter Robinson and the Irish Minister for Trade and Development, Joe Costello TD

Immediately before the ceremony there was a special meeting of Belfast City Council when a resolution marking the anniversary was passed.

The Lord Mayor and members of the council then joined representatives of the armed forces, ex-services associations and the main churches for a short procession from the Council Chamber to the Garden of Remembrance.

A crowd of bystanders applauded as the military band and uniformed service personel ended the ceremony.
