One defendant at Dungannon Court got more than he bargained for when his partner went into labour just as he was about to face a hearing.
Barrister Mr Blaine Nugent had just called the case of Coalisland man Ovidijus Gustys, 20, from Derryowen Place, at East Tyrone Magsitrate’s Court on Friday when he was informed that the partner of the defendant had gone into labour in the confines of the court, and an ambulance had arrived to take her to hospital.
Mr Nugent told the court that the defendant was “torn whether to come into court or to go with his partner” to hospital.
District Judge John Meehan quickly adjourned the case until February 28 so that the couple could deal with the pressing medical issue.
Mr Gustys stands accused of two counts of assault on April 29, 2012.
