PM’s assurances not of great comfort

WE heard it before from the Iron Lady that we were as British as Finchley. David Cameron, who professes to be a wholehearted United Kingdom leader, reassured us in Coleraine that the Olympics were for the UK even though they were titled GB. Just like the past. When unionists wanted total integration with the kingdom rather than being an appendix they received no comfort so we remained Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Gregory Campbell MP asked that the Games be titled as UK Olympic Games. We will see what efforts are made when the Games are over and the ministerial fever subsides what arrangements are made to correct any anomalies in our identifications and partnerships. Was it not President HW Bush of the USA who said ‘read my lips, no new taxes’? A lady from England once said to me that she discovered that Northern Ireland people were good at reading people. I think they have good practice; let us see real change.

Cllr David Barbour

Coleraine
