Police have acknowledged that a cache of ammunition and a hand gun were uncovered during the renovation of a house near Tamnamore, a small village in east Tyrone.
The handgun and ammunition were allegedly found in a dusty plastic bag underneath floorboards during the renovation of the house during June.
It is claimed that the workmen who made the find reported it to the police, who came with a forensic team and removed the weapons.
However, police initially denied any knowledge of the incident.
The weapon will now be expedited for re-examination to establish if it can be linked to any historical incidents.
The Pat Finucane Centre had announced it was pursuing an investigation into the discovery and its possible connections with violent loyalists.
