DUP representatives Cllr Carla Lockhart, Michelle McIlveen MLA and Cllr Margaret Tinsley step out to mark International Womens' Day with Dr Janet Gray MBE, newly selected candidate for Lisburn and Castlereagh Council.

The DUP has announced blind waterski champion Janet Gray as one of their council candidates, just in time for International Women’s Day.

Janet, who was awarded an MBE in 2002, addressed the DUP’s annual conference last November and spoke afterwards of her interest in politics.

She will stand as a candidate in the new Lisburn and Castlereagh Council.

Speaking to the News Letter last year she said: “I have been a long-time admirer of the DUP and I would like to see the party grow and succeed.

A major rally is being held in Belfast today and the City Hall will be bathed in purple tonight, to mark International Women’s Day.

Marchers will gather at the Art College and walk to the City Hall where there will be songs, speeches and a special reception.

Belfast event organiser Helen Crockard said: “We hope people here will really get behind IWD this year and join us in celebrating the contribution of women to society in Northern Ireland and around the world.”
