Councillors in spat over UDR memorial

A motion to update a window in memory of the UDR at Belfast City Hall and to install a memorial bench at the Cenotaph sparked a bitter spat between the DUP and Sinn Fein last night.

DUP councillor Ruth Patterson said she took immense pleasure that the motion she proposed had come to fruition.

Sinn Fein councillor Gerard O’Neill said Operation Banner – the Army’s operation in Ulster during the Troubles – was a “disaster”, adding: “The only good thing that happened to the UDR was its disbandment.”

DUP councillor Christopher Stalford hit back saying his party would have kept the Maze prison open and prisoners inside.
