The Union flag may no longer fly every day at Belfast City Hall after a vote of the council’s policy committee was taken on Friday.
The committee also voted to remove the flag from the Ulster Hall and Duncrue complex - both council-owned properties.
The committee’s vote will now be taken to full council on December 3 when the decision will be considered.
The motion to remove the flag won by a majority of two votes. Sinn Fein, the SDLP and Alliance party all voted for, leaving the vote at 11 to nine.
