Walkout claim denied by Storey

THE DUP chairman of Stormont’s education committee has dismissed as “pathetic” a claim by the UUP MLA Danny Kinahan that he had led a “walkout” from the committee yesterday.

Mervyn Storey said that he had left the committee hearing to meet someone about a constituency issue and said that a UUP MLA was also absent for part of yesterday’s meeting, which was discussing the Education Bill, which will introduce the Education and Skills Authority (ESA).

Yesterday morning Mr Kinahan, the committee’s deputy chairman, released a statement which “called on the DUP members of the education committee to show some responsibility, following their group walkout this morning”.

But last night Mr Storey said that it was evidence of “paranoia by the Ulster Unionist Party who I suppose get edgy when they see people walking out of rooms, but I’m not John McCallister, Basil McCrea or David McClarty”.

He added: “They need to focus their minds on what they are for, not just what they are against.”
