Leadership 'not that different'

WHEN queried about how he has found the position of party leader after such a long period as deputy leader, Mr Robinson plays down the differences.

"I think maybe from outside people have considered that a leader sits in there on their own and takes the decisions as to what the party should do," he says.

"We've a democratic party; I was part of the leadership before I became the leader. The role doesn't change greatly because you're still sitting down with party colleagues; you're still deciding how to move forward.

"I suppose the difference is that you're on the front line in terms of having to argue those cases; get them through your party; get them through the Executive; get them through the public."

Asked if he consults former leader Ian Paisley about decisions, Mr Robinson says: "Ian's one of our party officers and he is a member of our Assembly group and a member of our Westminster team as well...he hasn't gone away you know."
