Nesbitt 'needs to clarify UUP speculation'

VICTIMS need clarity on whether former TV presenter Mike Nesbitt will join the Ulster Unionist Party, a senior republican has said.

Mr Nesbitt, who is one of four Victims Commissioners, has been the subject of speculation that he could stand as an Ulster Unionist candidate for the Westminster seat in Strangford vacated by Iris Robinson.

Sinn Fin MLA Francie Molloy said victims needed to know what Mr Nesbitt's intentions were.

"Mike Nesbitt cannot ride two horses, his position as one of the Victims Commissioners needs to be totally separate from any party political affiliation; the victims across the North deserve clarity on this issue and will want to know in just what direction Mr Nesbitt is heading," said the Mid Ulster Assemblyman.

"Mike Nesbitt needs to clarify this situation as soon as possible," he added.

The News Letter was unable to contact Mr Nesbitt for comment.
