Political elite gather for Slugger awards ceremony

FIGURES from across Ulster's political spectrum will be honoured tonight at an awards ceremony in Belfast.

The Slugger O’Toole Political Awards 2008 are taking place at W5 in the Odyssey Arena complex.

Honours will be bestowed on politicians, others in public office, journalists and bloggers.

The award categories include best: MLA, external representa-tive (MPs, MEPs and others), local authority, local councillor, up-and-coming politician, Stormont committee chair, political blogger, participation and involvement, journalism, local newspaper and, the perhaps less coveted, jobsworth of the year.

For the last six years, with all its various eyes and ears, Slugger O’Toole has been an avid watcher of the political scene through its blogging site – widely used by political anoraks, thinkers, journalists and politicians alike.

The Slugger site allows for political debate and usually anonymous hard-edged critique, with satire to the fore and tongues often firmly fixed in cheeks.

A spokesman for the awards said: “At Slugger we think that we have a fantastic opportunity to improve politics in a way that institutional reformers will never be able to. So we want to reward better politicians, better politics and better governance.”

Winners will be presented with a unique caricature of themselves by The Guardian’s political cartoonist, Martin Rowson.
