A Presbyterian minister from Donemana has died while diving at St John’s Point off the County Donegal coast.

The Rev Stewart Jones was airlifted to Sligo Hospital during a rescue operation on Saturday.

UUP MLA for Newry and Armagh Danny Kennedy who was a contemporary of Rev Jones at school in south Armagh, said: “He was from the Bessbrook area and he was a lovely fella, a very fine fella.

“He was academically gifted and very clever.

“He was the eldest of the Jones family and there was enormous pride within the family and the local community when he went into the church as a Presbyterian minister.”

Ian Scott, from Malin Head Coastguard, said cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) was carried out.

“Sadly, despite administering CPR, from when the diver was recovered until his arrival at hospital, the man died.”

He had been diving with another man from Londonderry, who was also airlifted to hospital during the rescue operation.
