There has been a big increase in voter turnout for this year’s Euro election, with almost an extra 150,000 voters making it out to the polls.

Chief electoral officer Graham Shields spoke to the News Letter about the roughly nine per cent increase at the Euro election tally at the King’s Hall, as the count neared its first stage of results.

Last time the poll was run, in 2009, Sinn Fein came top by a wide margin, with more than 126,000 first-preference votes.
