Anti-Catholic house bias a ‘myth’ - DUP

The DUP have hit out over what they claim is a persistent republican “myth” about housing in north Belfast.

The party said claims that most of those on the housing waiting list in the area are Catholics are completely false, and it has the figures to prove it.

In a statement from North Belfast MP Nigel Dodds, the DUP said: “For many years nationalists and republicans have peddled the myth that housing need in north Belfast is overwhelmingly nationalist, indeed they have said it so often and with such confidence that it has been accepted as an established fact. However, this is simply not true.”

Figures it has obtained from the Housing Executive for the constituency of North Belfast show that, as of September, there were 5,304 people on the waiting list in the constituency.

Of this, 2,059 were designated Protestant and 1,986 as Catholic.

The North Belfast Civil Rights Association had announced online that it was planning to hold a protest march at 12.15pm today, from Duncairn Avenue to the University of Ulster, over what it called “the severe lack of housing and leisure facilities for the nationalist community”.
