This is Bessie - the dog which was seen cowering as it was kicked three times and lifted by the scruff of the neck in video footage understood to have been taken in Banbridge.

The five year-old black and white Collie was rescued by the PSNI and is now in foster care, having been given a check-up by a vet on Wednesday.

The PSNI said the dog appeared to be in good health. It is understood that although the video was published recently the incident may have taken place some months ago.

David Wilson from the USPCA said they are hopeful Bessie can be re-homed soon.

A 43 year-old man has been released on bail pending further enquiry, having been arrested on Wednesday morning.

The video sparked outrage from YouTube and Facebook users and has been viewed thousands of times.

Mr Wilson said the footage is the worst he has seen being shared on Facebook.
