A five-year-old boy was found drowned in a man-made lake by a passer-by.
The youngster is believed to have wandered off from the family home in the Belgree area of Tyrrelstown, west Dublin, yesterday morning before making his way to the large pond on the edge of the housing estate.
He has been named locally as Ahmed Bari, a member of a well-known Muslim family with Pakistani heritage.
Emergency crews tried in vain to resuscitate the child after the alarm was raised by a woman who found him in the water.
He was taken to Temple Street Children’s Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Gardai said officers were treating the death as a tragic accident.
The funeral is to take place this afternoon from Clonskeagh Mosque.
The drowning is the second in west Dublin in the last fortnight after 13-year-old Ricky Osagie died while rescuing two of his friends on June 20.
