Police in south Belfast have shut down a cannabis factory containing cannabis plants with a street value of £117,000 in the Stranmillis area of the city.
The factory was discovered in a house in St. Albans Gardens yesterday [January 28].
Detective Inspector Peter Mullan said: “Drugs are clearly an issue of concern to local communities and officers have been working closely with residents in South Belfast to tackle the issue of drug supply and distribution. This is a significant seizure.
“Where properties are being used to grow cannabis plants, often the electricity supply has been tampered with and this presents a risk to adjacent properties. We would encourage landlords and property owners to make regular checks of their property to ensure they are not being used by criminal elements.
“In this particular instance, it would appear that someone was staying in the property and tending to the plants. We would appeal to anyone who may have witnessed individuals entering or leaving the property to contact Police at Musgrave on 0845 600 8000. Alternatively information can be provided anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”
