Continued protests prompt bus diversions

Translink have announced that all their services through east Belfast will be diverted from Tuesday until further notice.

On Friday a bus was set alight in Newtownabbey and on Monday night a driver was left with facial injuries after a brick was thrown through the bus window on the lower Newtownards road.

The company said the current “civil unrest” had forced them to take the decision for the safety of their passengers and staff.

Catherine Mason, Group Chief Executive of Translink, said: “The safety of our passengers and employees is a priority and our highest concern.

“Last night in an attempted hijacking one of our drivers sustained facial injuries - our thoughts and concerns are with him and our other colleagues who have been impacted by this recent disorder. In light of this we have no option but to adjust our evening bus services to continue to operate safely.

“We would thank our colleagues driving buses who have continued to deliver services as far as they could in these difficult circumstances and worked hard to get passengers home. We have received many expressions of thanks and support.”

For further information on impacted bus services call Translink’s Contact Centre on 028 90 66 66 30 or go to www.translink.co.uk
