LIKE many on the right of the Conservative Party, Mr Burns was a “massive coalition sceptic” who would liked David Cameron (pictured) to have led a minority government rather than entering a partnership with the Liberal Democrats.
However, he says that, having entered the coalition, the Conservatives “must be seen to have followed the course” though there must be a “distinctly Conservative offering” at the next general election.
He says that Mr Cameron “has the potential to be a very great Prime Minister” but that he “needs an independent mandate”.
Mr Burns also criticised Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, saying that by refusing to accept changes to the Lords reform bill and instead scuppering any reforms because of Tory opposition to elected peers, Mr Clegg was “throwing his toys out of the pram”.
