THE number of people being treated for drus abuse in Northern Ireland has increased by 16 per cent latest figures have revealed.
In a report from the Department of Health on Thursday, it was stated that 2,999 individuals presented for treatment over the last 12-month period compared with 2,593 in 2010/11.
Other details from the report revealed that the majority (75 per cent) of individuals who presented were male; and just under one quarter (24 per cent) were aged 21 years and under.
Cannabis was the most commonly reported main drug of misuse; it was reported by 41 per cent of individuals in 2011/12 compared with 40 per cent in 2010/11.
Both other opiates and cocaine were the third most commonly reported main drugs of misuse; each reported by seven per cent of individuals in 2011/12.
Heroin was reported as the main drug of misuse by six per cent of individuals in 2011/12 compared with seven per cent in 2010/11.
