A service of celebration for the life of former Belfast Lord Mayor and long-time city councillor Hugh Smyth will be held in St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast today.

The service will take place at 12.30pm and Mr Smyth, who died on Monday, will be buried afterwards in Roselawn Cemetery.

The funeral cortege will leave West Belfast Orange Hall and proceed along the Shankill Road – the late councillor’s political heartland.

Hundreds of people are expected to gather to pay their last respects to a public representative who was one of the great characters in Ulster politics.

A tribute will be paid by family, friends and political associates in the Orange hall, starting at 10.45am.

Mr Smyth was founder of the Progressive Unionist Party and, in addition to being a city councillor and alderman for the Court ward, he also served at Stormont in the 1970s.

The former councillor is survived by his wife Ellen.
