The funeral is set to take place today for a former RUC officer who was tried and acquitted in a notorious murder case.
Former RUC Special Branch officer Charles McCormick died on Saturday and is to buried in the Co Antrim village of Gracehill today, as stated in yesterday’s death notices.
Mr McCormick’s name had been linked to the murder of Joe Campbell, a Catholic officer killed in Cushendall in 1977.
Three years after Sgt Campbell’s death, Mr McCormick was acquitted of his murder.
He was convicted of 27 other charges including possession of explosives and firearms, and armed robbery, but these were quashed on appeal. He consistently denied any involvement, and later sued the police for wrongful dismissal.
The Campbell killing has never been solved, but one line of inquiry was that Sgt Campbell was suspicious that a series of robberies in the area were of an ex-republican paramilitary, working as an informer.
