Giro d’Italia day two: Thousands cheer cyclists across Belfast finish line

Waiting for Video...

Thousands lined the streets of Belfast city centre on Saturday afternoon to cheer Marcel Kittel to victory in Stage Two of the Giro d’Italia.

A thunderous applause and sea of pink greeted the riders as they crossed the finish line just after 4pm.

Earlier the cyclists had passed some stunning scenery on the Causeway Coast taking in Ballymena, Ballycastle, Bushmills, the Giant’s Causeway and Carrickfergus.

The almost constant rainfall did little to deter crowds, as every section of the route was lined with spectators.

The peloton of 196 riders rode 219km on stage two of the race.

On Sunday cyclists will ride from Armagh to Dublin, before completing the three-week event in Italy.
