A number of homes were evacuated in the Ballymagroarty area of Londonderry on Saturday night after a suspicious object was found in the area.
The alert at Aileach Road in the city was raised shortly before 10pm.
Police had concerns that the object had the appearance of being an explosive device and a number of houses were evacuated.
Army Technical Officers attended and carried out a controlled explosion.
It was declared a hoax.
Residents were out of their homes until about 5.30am.
