Flag protester Jamie Bryson yesterday pulled out of the European election race, urging any of those who might have supported him to instead support the TUV or UKIP.

The Bangor loyalist, pictured, who until recently insisted that he would be standing, admitted that he had struggled to raise money for the £5,000 deposit to stand. An online appeal brought in just £165.

Instead, Mr Bryson said that he would stand for election as a council candidate in North Down.

Mr Bryson said that he would use the money raised for his abortive European campaign to fund the council challenge.
