Jamie Bryson’s mother has said First Minister Peter Robinson should be ashamed of himself as her son sits in jail while, she says, politicians stay silent on the matter.

Twenty-three year-old Bryson was remanded in custody on Saturday on charges relating to flags protests.

His parents Louise and David were in court for his first appearance at the weekend, and Louise later addressed the weekly flag demonstration at Belfast City Hall.

In a statement to the Sunday Life Mrs Bryson said her son was being used as a scapegoat and accused politicians of failing the people of Northern Ireland.

She said: “Jamie has been used as a scapegoat because the Northern Ireland Assembly is incapable of running a peace process or keeping a fair shared future for Northern Ireland - this is what the people of Northern Ireland want.

“First Minister Peter Robinson seems totally incapable of working out or dealing with anything controversial and should be absolutely ashamed of himself that he has allowed this to happen.

“Does he really care? Where are the unionist leaders who the Protestant people voted for?

“How long will my 23-year-old son stay in prison before a unionist MLA speaks out? This is political policing.”
