Knife man held near north Belfast school

A man with a knife has been arrested close to a North Belfast primary school.

Members of the public saw the suspect acting suspiciously in the Oldpark Avenue area close to the Sacred Heart school and called police.

When officers arrived he attempted to run away but was caught and the blade discovered.

The man aged 34 was detained on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and is assisting police with their inquiries.

A PSNI spokesman said: “Police are grateful for the vigilance of members of the local community who in this case reported this male and his suspicious activity promptly to the police allowing us to respond quickly, apprehend a potentially dangerous individual and in doing so protect the local community.”
