A device which sparked a security alert in north Belfast has been declared genuine.

The PSNI had responded to the report of a device being thrown at a car in the republican Duncairn Gardens area.

The Army were called, and a number of houses were evacuated.

The road was also closed between Edlingham Street and North Queen Street.

By around 5pm the police declared the alert over and said: “A viable pipe bomb type device was examined by Army technical officers and has now been removed for further examination”.

It is thought it was thrown at the civilian vehicle at around 11am, but did not detonate.

A 27-year-old male has been arrested by police investigating the incident.

Anyone with information that could assist the investigation is asked to contact police on the non-emergency number 101.
