PSNI confirm man's death

A man in his 80s who died in an accident at a farm has been named.

Local sources said the victim was Barney McAleer, who had been working alongside his brother when the incident occurred in the Loughnamarve Road, Lime Hill area, on the outskirts of Pomeroy.

It is believed he had been hit by a tractor.

Sinn Fein councillor for the area, Cathal Mallaghan, said: “Barney was working with his brother getting the silage into round bales when the accident took place.

“His family would be very well known in the area, and his death is a big shock for the whole farming community.

“This is an extremely busy time of year for farm-ers, everybody is working long hours trying their best to get the silage ready for the winter feed”.

The Health and Safety Executive is investigating.
