DIRECTOR of the opening ceremony at the Olympics, Danny Boyle, is said to have wanted Deputy first minister Martin McGuinness to hold the Olympic flag at London 2012.
However, when Mr Boyle informed the Prime Minister of his plans for the former IRA commander, according to the ‘The Telegraph’, the alarm bells began to ring.
“Danny Boyle told David Cameron that he wanted Martin McGuinness to be one of the Olympic flag holders,” a member of the Government tells Mandrake at The Spectator Parliamentarian of the Year Awards, at the Savoy hotel.
“Cameron said, ‘no way’, and put his foot down. Shami Chakrabarti was then asked instead.”
