Memorial vandalised by ‘faceless thugs’

Those behind the latest act of vandalism against a monument to soldiers killed by the IRA have been branded “faceless thugs”.

The stone in White Brae, north Belfast, has come under repeated attack and the latest one saw blue paint splashed across it.

It honours three Scottish soldiers killed in 1971 and it is believed the paint bomb attack occurred sometime between Sunday evening and Monday morning.

Jim Wright, chairman of the Oldpark/Cavehill branch of the Royal British Legion, said: ‘This is now the tenth time the memorial has been attacked in the last few years.”

He said that it has cost thousands of pounds to repair the stone and added: “What I would say to those responsible and the community they come from is simple: As determined as these faceless thugs are to destroy the memorial, we are doubly determined to ensure that it remains at this site as a reminder to those in the IRA who were responsible for luring three young boys to this spot and murdering them in cold blood.”

Police asked anyone with information to call Tennent Street station on 101.
