Mickey Harte lends support to abortion motion

GAA Tyrone manager Mickey Harte has lent his support to an SDLP/DUP proposal to make abortions outside of the NHS illegal in the Province.

The proposal was put forward by DUP MLA Paul Givan and SDLP MLA Alban Maginness in the Assembly last week.

Mr Harte said: “Human life is the most precious gift you can receive and the most basic fundamental human right is the right to life.

“Society is defined by how it treats the most vulnerable in our community and we must do all in our power to provide the best care possible in the most difficult of circumstances.

“Every abortion that takes place is tragic for both mother and child which requires the highest level of care from our medical profession.

“This care is best found in the NHS that can be trusted, with no financial gain, to act in the best interests of both mother and child within the law that gives protection to the unborn child.”

Mr Givan and Mr Maginness said: “There is a tidal wave of cross-community support for our amendment to the Criminal Justice Bill that ensures the highest level of accountability and transparency on the sensitive issue of abortion by supporting the NHS.

“The NHS offers the highest levels of service and, importantly, the NHS has multiple layers of accountability which can give the public confidence that criminal law is being complied with and both mother and child are receiving the best possible care in the most difficult of circumstances.”
