Regional Development Minister Danny Kennedy will take to the roads at this year’s North West 200 – potentially reaching speeds of 185mph as a passenger with professional rider Steve Mercer.
The minister’s acceptance of the challenge from race organisers to be a pillion passenger was revealed yesterday at the launch of the annual race.
Following delays and cancellations in previous years legislation has been amended to allow organisers two contingency days in case the weather halts races.
Mr Kennedy said he hopes this year’s event will be a great success.
“The weather is always an unpredictable factor in the race programme, however, organisers are in a very much stronger place this year in terms of dealing with adverse weather conditions
“I wish the organisers and riders every success with this fabulous event and I look forward to be one of the many tens of thousands of spectators heading to the ‘North West’ in May.”
