Motorists may have driven over a suspicious device in east Belfast before it was reported to police, it has emerged.

The object, which was discovered by a member of the public at the junction of Albertbridge Road and Castlereagh Street at around 6.15pm on Wednesday, has been taken away for further examination.

Motorists were diverted down Mountpottinger Road and Woodstock Link away from the junction during the alert, which lasted around 12 hours.

Detectives have appealed for information.
