Mother-of-three Collette Matthews said the arrival of baby Ava at 3am in the Royal Maternity Hospital in Belfast “is the best start to the New Year anyone could ever get”.
Mrs Matthews, 37, who delivered her third child in a water birth, said her daughter arrived only one hour after she arrived at the hospital.
The Dunmurry mother said her daughter and son “will be delighted to meet their new baby sister”.
“2014 is off to a fantastic start for us all now,” she said. “Ava was 6lb 11oz and when she was born she let us know she was here. But she has been sleeping ever since.”
Baby Ava was one of at least 29 babies born in the Province’s hospitals on New Year’s Day.
The first Ulster baby to enter the world at 00.28 was baby Niamh Howell to mother Cathy Howell from Lisnaskea.
The first New Year’s Day baby weighed 7lb 13oz.
She was born in the Western Trust’s South West Acute Hospital in Enniskillen.
Another baby girl was born in the same hospital at 1.15am to mother Catherine Gallagher from Omagh.
Meanwhile, the first baby born in the South Eastern Trust arrived at 00.48am in the Ulster Hospital to mother Carol Anne Armstrong from Millisle.
At 9.47am Ulster Hospital nurse Nicola Mellon gave birth to a baby boy, also in her place of work.
Seven baby boys were born in Craigavon Area Hospital in the South Eastern Trust on New Year’s Day.
The first baby boy was born at 1.15am in the hospital.
Meanwhile, another five babies were born in Daisy Hill hospital in Newry, also in the South Eastern Trust.
The first baby born in the Newry hospital – a boy – arrived just before 5.30am.
The first baby to be born in the Royal Maternity arrived at 2.54am to mother Deborah Wilson from Belfast.
Baby Imogen, who weighed 8lb 10oz, was delivered in a water birth.
Also in the Royal Maternity, baby Holly was born at 5.59am to mother Amanda Hickland.
Later, at 6.45am, a baby girl was born to Jane Young from Belfast and at 7.57am a baby boy was born to Stacey Trimble, also from Belfast.
Three babies were born on New Year’s Day in the Northern Trust.
The first baby born in Antrim Area arrived at 1.08am.
Baby Samuel Keith weighed in at 8lb 9oz to Randalstown mother Michelle McCann.
At 5.58am baby Semple was born, weighing 8lb 3oz, to mum Joanne Hanna from Cloughmills. At 10.47am Kelly Hutchinson from Coleraine delivered a baby boy in the Causeway Hospital.
