Almost 50 homes remained without electricity on Saturday evening following strong winds which began on Boxing Day night.

A Northern Ireland Electricity spokeswoman said engineers are hopeful they will have restored power to the majority of their customers by Saturday night.

Meanwhile BT said they were still dealing with a “significant number” of faults in Omagh, Enniskillen, Magherafelt, Downpatrick and Lisburn at the weekend.

A number of BT lines came down when the strongest of the winds hit the southern and eastern areas of the province on Thursday and Friday.

Close to 2,000 repairs have already been made, said a spokesperson.

They added: “We are doing all that we can to repair faults as quickly as possible and minimise disruption, however, in some instances the weather is also hampering our repair crews efforts to access locations.

“With the severe weather set to continue, our service teams will work throughout the weekend to make every possible effort to restore service to customers.”

Electrical faults can be reported to NIE on 08457643643 or online at www.nie.co.uk
