Ninety-two prisoners will spend Christmas with their families after being granted home leave this festive season.
The number allowed home is up from 72 last year and includes 26 life sentence prisoners.
Of the 92 prisoners released 40 are normally housed in Magilligan and 48 in Maghaberry.
Three young offenders and one woman have been granted leave from Hydebank Wood Young Offenders Centre and Prison.
The prisoners have different periods of leave, ranging from two to nine days between Christmas Eve and January 2.
A Department of Justice statement explained: “All prisoners granted Christmas Home Leave have been the subject of a satisfactory risk assessment and have either successfully completed a home leave programme or undergone periods of unaccompanied testing in the community.”
All those released are subject to certain conditions.
There are currently 1,817 people being held in prisons in Northern Ireland.
